Epsit Procedure for Pilonidal Sinus Disease

Pilonidal sinus disease can be uncomfortable and worrying for children and their families. Dr Jill offers a modern and gentle solution: the Epsit procedure.

What is Pilonidal Sinus Disease?

Pilonidal sinus disease occurs when a small tunnel or tract forms under the skin, often at the top of the buttocks. While more common in adults, children can also be affected by this condition, which can cause discomfort, pain, and sometimes infection.

Introducing the Epsit Procedure:

The Epsit procedure is a special surgery designed for kids with pilonidal sinus disease. It’s different from traditional surgeries because it’s minimally invasive, which means it’s gentler on your child’s body.

Under general anaesthesia, a thin tube called an endoscope is inserted through the incision. The endoscope contains a camera and light source, allowing the surgeon to see inside the sinus tracts and surrounding tissue without the need for larger incisions.

Using endoscopic instruments, the sinus tracts and any associated debris or infected tissue is carefully removed. The goal is to completely clear the affected area to prevent recurrence of the condition.

The incision may be left open to heal naturally or closed with dissolvable sutures. Leaving the wound open allows for drainage and reduces the risk of infection.

How Does the Epsit Procedure Work?

During the Epsit procedure:

  1. Preparation: Your child will meet with our caring day surgery team who will ensure they’re comfortable and ready for the procedure.
  2. Anaesthesia: Your child will receive a general anaesthetic to ensure no discomfort y throughout the procedure.
  3. Tiny Incision: Dr Jill will make a very small cut over the sinus tract. This tiny cut allows gentle removal of the problem area without causing extra discomfort.
  4. Healing Begins: After the procedure, your child will rest and start healing. We will give you clear instructions on how to take care of the area at home.

Why Choose the Epsit Procedure?

  • Faster Recovery: Kids bounce back quickly from the Epsit procedure, so they can get back to school and sport sooner.
  • Less Pain: Because the incisions are small, there’s less pain after the Epsit procedure compared to other surgeries.
  • Smaller Scars: The tiny incisions mean smaller scars, so your child can feel confident and comfortable in their own skin.

Your Child’s Comfort Is Our Priority:

We understand that having surgery can be scary, especially for kids. That’s why we’re here to make the experience as gentle and comfortable as possible for your child.
